About
The Series
The Divine Comedy series, by Dante and illustrated by
Salvador Dali is considered by many to have been Salvador Dali's most
incredible and notable work. Published 1960 - 1964. The title of
this poem "Divine Comedy" refers to the search for spiritual salvation,
according to the doctrine of Catholicism and to the classical dramatic
form of the comedy in which life's problems are resolved in a happy
ending.
The Divine Comedy describes Dantes imaginary Journey through Hell,
Purgatory, and Paradise. No other poem in any language has such a wide
appeal as the interest created by one man's vision of life after death.
For the last six hundred years, the Divine comedy, with its outreaching
verse and imagery has drawn people from every walk of life into its verse
and has been illustrated throughout history by such notable artists as
Boticelli, Flaxman, Dore, and even the poet William Blake. Our favorite, is
of course, the woodcut engravings presented by one of the greatest
artists in history, Surrealist Master Salvador Dali
AUTHENTIC DALI WOODCUT ENGRAVINGS
THAT ARE HAND SIGNED ARE BECOMING NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND.
THE LIMITED SUPPLY OF ORIGINAL
AUTHENTIC DALI WOODCUTS SURELY WILL INCREASE THE VALUE OF THIS PIECE
This piece
from Dali's La divina commedia (The Divine Comedy) pairs medieval and
Renaissance poetry with Surrealistic art in a breathtaking fashion. Many
scholars believe this is Dali's most important work and one that depicts
his own search for spiritual truth.
This
authentic Dali woodcut is over 40 years old and comes on cream color
B.F.K. Rives (SCRIPT) paper. The watercolors are very strong and lively.
Our woodcut was published by Jean Estrade, Paris (1960-1964). The Dali
Divine Comedy woodcut set consists of 100 different subjects. Two
engravers spent four years making 3,500 woodblocks necessary for the
project that DALI, the greatest artist of all time, personally
supervised.

The
Woodcut Process
MANY ART SCHOLARS CONSIDER DALI'S DIVINE COMEDY TO BE THE FINEST WOODCUT ENGRAVINGS EVER MADE.
THE WOODCUT PROCESS IS A LOST ART FORM. EACH COLOR REQUIRED A
SEPARATE WOODBLOCK.
EXPERT ENGRAVERS SPENT 4 YEARS
MAKING THE NECESSARY 3500 WOODBLOCKS TO COMPLETE THIS PROJECT WITH
DALI'S PERSONAL SUPERVISION
HIS
HAND SIGNATURE WAS PERSONALLY ENGRAVED INTO EACH WOODBLOCK
THIS PIECE WAS ALSO HAND SIGNED
BY SALVADOR DALI
Printing from woodblocks was known in China from around 800
ad. in Europe as early as the twelfth century, but originally only for stamping designs on textiles. the earliest surviving prints on paper cannot be dated before the last years of the fourteenth century (1370 found in Eastern France). Since woodblocks can be printed together with type, this was for many years the
favored method of book illustration. Wood engravings were first developed in the eighteenth century. A very hard wood such as
boxwood is used, which is always cut across the grain. the tool used is a version of a burin or graver, the handle of which is held against the palm and the blade pushed before the hand, making a clean incision into the wood. Wood engravings are printed in relief in the same way as woodcuts. The wood engraver is able to produce much more detailed work than the woodcutter and characteristically achieves an effect of closely worked lines that print white against black. Thomas Bewick of Newcastle (1753 - 1828) was the first great exponent of wood engraving, which was much used in the nineteenth century for book illustration. Wood engraving can be used for color work.
Separate blocks are generally cut for each color area. In the instance of Salvador Dali's early woodcut engravings, "The Divine Comedy (1952-1964), up to twenty five woodblocks were used in the printing. many of these progressive proof impressions taken from the blocks survive giving a vivid visual history of the build up of the final image from multiple blocks.
About Salvador Dali
Spanish Surrealist
Painter, 1904-1989
"Every morning when I wake up I experience an exquisite joy, the joy of
being Salvador Dali? and I ask myself in rapture, What wonderful things is
this Salvador Dali? going to accomplish today??" -Salvador Dali
A little
word about Salvador Dali . . .
A flamboyant painter, writer, sculptor and experimental film-maker, Salvador
Dali was probably the greatest Surrealist artist in history (certainly THE
greatest according to Dali!). Influenced by Sigmund Freud and his own
endlessly sophisticated mind Dali utilized bizarre dream imagery to create
the striking and unforgettable landscapes of his inner world.
Salvador Dali was born in May 11, 1904 in the town of Figueres, Spain, in
the principality of Catalonia. Salvador Dali spent his boyhood in Figueres
and at the family's summer home in the fishing village of Cadaques where his
first studio was built for him by his parents. He later went to school in
Madrid, at the Academy of Fine Arts. Dali was expelled from the Academy in
1923 for being undisciplined. Dali would return to this area as an adult,
with his wife Gala. Many of his paintings reflect his love of this area of
Spain.
Dali was to become a leader in the surrealist movement. His painting, The
Persistence of Memory, with the soft or melting watches is still one of the
best-known surrealist works in existence. Just prior to, and during, World
War II, due to his contrary and apolitical views, Dali was "excommunicated"
from the Surrealist community. In spite of this Dali continued to exhibit
his surrealist works in many international exhibitions.
Dali left Europe during the war for the United State, where lived from 1940
to 1948. Here he was granted his first major retrospective by the Museum of
Modern Art in New York in 1941.
In 1974, Dali opened the Teatro Museo in Figueres, Spain. This was followed
by retrospectives in Paris and London at the end of the decade. After the
death of his wife, Gala, in 1982, Dali's health began to fail. It
deteriorated further after he was burned in a fire in his home in Pubol in
1984. Much of this part of his life was spent in seclusion, first in Pubol
and later in his apartments at Torre Galatea, adjacent to the Teatro Museo.
Salvador Dali died on January 23, 1989 in Figures from heart failure with
respiratory complications.
