173: Rare and finely carved ivory okimono, Tokyo school
Rare and finely carved ivory okimono, Tokyo school Meiji period, circa 1880 warrior supporting woman on his back; on wood base. (Good condition, shrinkage hairline on chest of woman and on base) ivory H22", base H3 1/2" *Narrative: This masterpiece in carved ivory is exquisitely detailed and intricately carved; it depicts a Japanese warrior grasping the hilt of a sword with his left hand while supporting a woman on his back with his right hand and forearm. The costume of each figure is beautifully detailed showing the many layers of the kimono the woman is wearing which is decorated with sprays of lotus blossoms; the trousers of the man show the details of embroidered dragon designs; the entirety of the costume has the appearance of fine silk. The feet of the man are shod with sandals and he stands among tree stumps and foliage with his right foot resting on a woven bundle of stones. The details of the anatomical features and the expressions on the faces are so life-like that it causes the viewer to wonder if the pair is pondering which possible direction they should go. The very base of the figure is stamped with the words Fort Portal and the number 7; under the base there is a red ring around the pulp cavity of the tusk which most likely held a seal with the maker's mark but which is now missing. The ivory figure itself is an impressive 22" tall and is mounted on a highly carved wood base resembling a reinforced rocky ledge; the base is 3 ½" tall, giving the figure a total height of 25 ½". *Reference: Vickers, Michael et al. IVORY AN INTERNATIONAL HISTORY AND ILLUSTRATED SURVEY. New York: Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 1987. p274. In Japan in 1887 the Tokyo School of Art was founded under Western influence, at which sculpture, but not netsuke carving, was one of the courses. One of the tenets of the ivory carvers was that, as far as was possible, the figure would be carved from a single section of ivory; only an outstretched arm, for example, would be inset. The figures were mostly about 10" tall and extremely realistic, depicting a range of occupations from the lowest peasant to the samurai class. Instead of the finely finished surface required by the export market, in which every mark of the graver was sanded away, the chisel marks, albeit barely visible, were left to be seen. These proved popular in the west and today there are far more examples in the western world than in Japan. An additional conceit was to leave the original rough and brown-stained surface of the tusk showing around the base. The major artist at the school was Ishikawa Komei whose best work is of exceptional quality and stands comparison with the greatest sculptors. His range is from netsuke to large figures and with a considerable variety of subjects. Two other carvers whose work was of a high standard are Yoshida Homei and Hirasaka Hobun, the latter specializing in old men.
