MARTIN GUITAR OF NEW YORK 6 STRING ACOUSTIC GUITAR APPEARS TO BE PRE 1898 GUITAR & LR*Here is a wonderful old Martin guitar that was purchased at an estate sale in New York in the early 1950's.  It was purchased by an American Air Force Officer which he was going to restore and never did.  It stayed in his family for over 50 years & I purchased this at his estate he was selling (home and contents) so that he could travel the world one last time, before moving to a retirement community.  This guitar is missing a number of parts as you can see, and there is a hairline crack on the top near the holds which would house the strings, about 2" long & there is a scratch which is NOT a hairline, but a scratch on the front surface about 6 inches long. I have been told that this guitar can be fixed and that it was in very good condition for it's age.  I was a professional musician, and almost kept this to give to my son who already has a newer Martin, but decided to put it on ebay so that I can purchase his brother an older Strat guitar.  It has the logo inside in two places the logo is etched (possibly burned into the wood) & says: C.F. Martin & Co. then New York underneath that. I am not an expert on guitars, so please peruse the photos carefully as I've taken quite a few! I have shown the one marking under the opening, then there is a replica of this marking way on the inside where the handle and top of the case meet, but I couldn't get a photo of this.  The measurements are 38" long & The depth of the guitar is about 4" and the base dimensions are about 18" long & 11.5" at the widest part near the bottom and 8.5" at the widest part of the top of the base across (diameter).  The neck is about 2" wide at the top & 2.5" at the bottom. The neck alone measures 23" from the top to the round hole at the end.  The inside wood looks like mahogany? but I'm not certain.  The handle is wood that was painted on the back with black ebony & there are NO separations of the wood at all!!!!! It is a strong guitar with some light scratching on the sides & topm but in a lot better condition than most playing guitars after 20 years of use; and this one appears to be over 100 years old!  The metal tuning forks? are made of heavy brass or maybe copper and there are designs scrollwork (almost figure 8) designs on the metal on the sides.  There is real honest to goodness ivory (mesh lines on the ivory which indicate this is real ivory), with one missing and some cracks along the others.  This was made, from what I can gather, before serial numbers were used on these guitars in 1898 and then named C.F. Martin New York was named on the guitars from 1867 to 1898 when the logo would have said C.F. Martin & co. Nazareth, PA which then added serial numbers, so this guitar (a smaller guitar---is this a travel guitar?) was made before 1898.  I have NEVER seen a Martin this old, even as a professional musician!  Now I know there are experts out there who will know a lot more than I do, so please give me information if you can, and I'll add it, or give this information to the new owner.  The inside of the wood is gorgeous and the body, even with scratches and such is in good condition for it's age.  Please peruse the many photos!  My reserve is near what I paid, but I can tell you, if this was restored it would be worth a LOT of money and Christies, or Antiques Road Show would highlight a piece like this.  It will cost about 25.00 to special wrap and ship this via priority tracked or UPS ship in the US.  Insurance is extra.  My reserve is what I paid plus THE extra to place this in a home page special listing, but know that even in this condition this is a HIGH END PIECE, and if you have parts I believe the value would be in the many thousands of dollars, WOW!!!!! Thanks! NOTE: PLEASE EXCUSE THE CAMERA GLARE ON THE PHOTO OF THE BACK OF THE GUITAR & I RESERVE THE RIGHT TO CLOSE THIS LISTING IF THERE ARE ONLY TWO BIDDERS & IT DOES NOT REACH MY RESERVE ONE DAY BEFORE THE END OF THE AUCTION AS MY RESERVE IS LOW.  I WILL EMAIL THE RESERVE IF YOU ASK.  WITH PAYPAL YOU CAN DEFER PAYMENTS UNTIL 2006.  THIS IS A US SALE ONLY DUE TO THE SIZE OF THIS PIECE.  THANKS!
