Location

Meadow Valley:  This district is in west-central Plumas County sbout eight miles west of Quincy.  It includes the Edmanton, Buck's Lake, Spanish Peak, and Spanish Ranch areas.  The Quincy district lies just to the east and the Granite Basin district to the southwest.  The district was mined from the California gold rush days through the early 1900's.

Geology

The east portion of the district is underlain by quartzite, slate, schist, limestone, amphibolite, and serpentine.  Meadow Valley is covered by Pleistocene lake beds.  Granite lies to the west.  There are a number of scattered patches of auriferious Terriary gravels in the vicinity of and northwest of Spanish Ranch, which were mined by hydraulick and drifting.  The Pleistocene lake gravels also yielded gold.(Gold Districts of California-Bulletin 193, William B. Clark-California Division of Mines and Geology)

History

The Plumas County gold rush of 1850 was a direct result of Tom Stoddard?s Gold Lake story. However, Stoddard would never again locate the lake, and neither would the thousands of other hopeful prospectors that went in search of it. For the majority of miners who searched for Gold Lake, disappointment dominated. For others, their perseverance paid off with discoveries at Nelson Creek, Poorman?s Creek, Hopkins Creek, Onion Valley, Rich Bar, and Butte Bar. All provided rich diggings. Equally rewarding was a series of five mining bars on the East Branch of the North Fork of the Feather River: Rich Bar, Indian Bar, Smith Bar, French Bar, and Junction Bar. A group known as the Wisconsin Company was among those seeking pay dirt on Nelson Creek. Calling their site Meeker Flat after one of their members, they took out 93-pounds of precious metal in one period of three weeks. Discoveries of rich gold deposits continued in Plumas County through at least 1852. Gold mining is now carried on as a recreational pursuit, but gold was Plumas County?s cornerstone.

Most geologists concur that there is twice as much gold still remaining in the Plumas County area than was ever taken out.

Of the approximately 4,582,000 ounces of gold produced in Plumas County, 1855-1959, more than half came from Tertiary gravel placer mines worked on a large scale by hydraulic methods. The Gopher Hill, Nelson Point, Sawpit Flat, and Upper Spanish Creek mines, were all in alluvial gravels for there placer gold content. The Engles and Superior mines, primarily copper with a by product of gold. In the Crescent Mills district, in township 26N. range 9E, there was total production through 1959 of 3,255 ounces of placer gold and 32,069 ounces of lode gold. In area streams, in Quaternary gravels you will find placer gold. At the Green Mountain Mine they produced of 100,000 ounces of lode gold by 1890. In the Johnsville district, in the southcentral part of county, in east l/2 of township 22N. range 11E, they had a total production, 393,000 gold ounces. All regional stream and bench gravels contain placer gold. The Plumas-Eureka Mine, was a major producer of lode gold. At the La Porte district, in southwest part of the county, in township 21N and range 9E, was the hydraulic mining center since 1850s, with total production, 1855-1959, of 2,910,000 gold ounces. At Mumfords Mill the area copper mines had a by product of gold. At Spring Garden go northeast 9 mile and you will find the Walker Mine, primarily copper mine with a by product of gold.

During the 1920?s and 1930?s, Plumas County was number one in state copper production. Engle Mine on Lights Creek in northern Indian Valley produced $25 million over its lifetime. And, Walker Mine, 15-miles south, put out $23 million. Jack and James Ford discovered copper outcroppings above the North Arm of Indian Valley during the Civil War, while others found similar deposits along Genesee Valley?s Ward Creek. The Chapman brothers, at their primitive smelter in Genesee Valley, further processed the rich, naturally concentrated metal. During more than 15 years of operations, Engle Mine yielded 117 million pounds of copper, along with substantial amounts in gold and silver.

Ancient tertiary channels cross through this Mining Claim!

* The Ancient Rivers of Gold in northern California are from the Tertiary Period. The Tertiary rivers existed millions of years ago and many of them had large quantities of gold within their gravels. Because of that, they are known as the "Ancient Rivers of Gold." These now-dry Tertiary rivers are thought to be a prime source of the gold found in many of the rivers and streams of the Mother Lode region of northern California. The ancient rivers are discontinuous and sometimes follow tortuous routes. They have been altered by volcanic activity, erosion, and in some instances portions of the rivers have been covered by lava. Much of the region underwent extreme volcanic eruptions. Volcanic flows have been found up to 4,000 feet deep. Volcanic flows were up to 60 miles in length. Portions of an ancient river may be found at ground level or near the top of a mountain, or on the side of a mountain, or buried.
Early prospectors found portions of the ancient rivers and worked them for their rich gold content. Later, mining companies used hydraulic mining or drift mining techniques to recover the gold. In hydraulic mining, water under pressure is directed to, for example, the side of a ravine to dislodge the gravels and send the material to the sluices where the gold is recovered. The equipment that was used (called a "monitor" or "giant") was similar to a very large hose nozzle.
Geologic reports speak of gravel deposits up to 250 feet deep with gold deposits interspersed at various levels within the gravels. Some of the gravels of the ancient rivers of gold have been cemented together over time. Smaller materials between the larger gravels have bound the larger gravels together. Drift mining is used in those instances to follow the channel underneath the volcanic covering. In drift mining, tunnels are driven in bedrock underneath the channels and when the channels are reached, the richest stratum, resting immediately on the bedrock, is extracted by underground mining methods and then washed at the mouth of the tunnel.

Many miles of the ancient rivers are still un-worked And are very rich in gold.

*Information on this page is based on the classic work of Waldemar Lindgren of the United States Geological Survey and by study of Big Ten?s California Gold Map 5, which shows the relationship of the ancient rivers to landmarks, such as roads, creeks and towns in the region.

WHO MAY LOCATE A MINING CLAIM?

Any citizen of the United States, a minor who has reached the age of discretion, a corporation, and non-citizens (aliens) who have declared their intention to become a citizen. (43 CFR 3832.1)

WHERE CAN I LOCATE A MINING CLAIM?

A mining claim can be located on federal lands (BLM and Forest Service) that are open to mineral location (entry). If you have a specific location site in mind, you may verify that the lands are open to mineral entry. This can be accomplished by checking with the BLM State Office Information Access Center (Public Room), who will assist you in determining if the lands are open to mineral entry by checking master title plats, records, files and other pertinent information.

WHAT TYPES OF CLAIMS/SITES ARE THERE?

Lode - A classic vein, ledge, or other rock in place between definite walls. A lode claim is located by metes and bounds. The maximum length is 1,500 feet by 600 feet. (43 CFR 3841) Placer - All deposits, other than lodes. These include placer deposits of sand and gravel containing free gold and other minerals. Placer claims are located by legal subdivision. An individual may locate up to 20 acres with a maximum of 160 contiguous acres with 8 or more people (an association). A corporation is consider a single locator. (43 CFR 3842) Tunnel Site - A tunnel site is where a tunnel is run to develop a vein or lode. It may also be used for the discovery of unknown veins or lodes. To stake a tunnel site, two stakes are placed up to 3,000 feet apart on the line of the proposed tunnel. Recording and filing is the same as a lode claim. A Tunnel Site can be regarded more as a right-a-way, than a mining claim. (43 CAR 3843) Mill Site - Public lands which are non-mineral in character. Mill Sites may be located in connection with a placer or lode claim for mining and milling purposes or as an independent/custom mill site that is independent of a mining claim. Mill Sites are located by metes and bounds or legal subdivision and are up to 5 acres in size. (43 CAR 3844)

WHAT IS A LOCATION NOTICE AND WHERE MAY I GET THE FORM?

A location notice is a form that must be filed with the BLM, California State Office and your local County Recording Office. The following information must be included on the form; date of location of the claim/site, description of discovery monument, name of claim/site, legal description (metes and bounds or legal subdivision), and the names and addresses of all locators. There are separate notices for placers, lodes, and mill sites. You can obtain location notice forms from the BLM Public Room and stationary stores. (43 CAR 3833.1-2)

HOW DO I RECORD A MINING CLAIM?

You must file your mining claim/site location notice with the BLM, California State Office, within 90 days from the date of location of the claim or site and you must also file with the County Recording Office. All new locations must be accompanied by the required fees of a $10 service charge, $30 location fee, and a $125 maintenance payment fee for the first year of location, for a total of $135 per claim or site. For new locations located just prior to September 1 of each year, fees totaling $165 must be paid, and an $125 maintenance payment fee, or a Waiver with an assessment form and a $5 per claim assessment fee. This is the required $125 maintenance payment fee for the current assessment year and a $125 for the upcoming assessment year. (43 CAR 3833.1-2 and 43 CAR 3833.1-4)

MAY I CHANGE A LOCATION NOTICE AFTER I HAVE FILED WITH THE BLM?

Also, you must file these amendments with the county that the claim is in. You may not add or delete locators or change the location date of the claim/site. There is a $5 filing fee for filing an amended location notice. (43 CAR 3833.0-5[p])

WHAT MUST I DO TO MAINTAIN A CLAIM?

Once a claim/site is serialized, an annual filing must be made on or before September 1, of each year to maintain the claim/site. You must either pay the $125 maintenance fee payment or those claimants having 10 or fewer claims/sites may choose to file the maintenance fee payment waiver certification (small miners waiver). If you choose to file a small miners waiver, then you must also perform $100 worth of labor or improvements on all placers or lode claims during the assessment year (September 1, noon through September 1, noon). An Assessment Work Notice (Proof of Labor) form must be filed on or before December 30, along with the $5 filing fee per claim. WHAT IS A SMALL MINERS WAIVER?

A small miners waiver is short for maintenance fee payment waiver certification. A small miners waiver may be filed by those claimants holding 10 or fewer claims/sites, instead of paying the $125 maintenance fee by September 1, of each year. If you choose to file a small miners wavier you must also perform assessment work and file an assessment work notice by December 30, of each year. (43 CAR 3833.1-6)
